A cheeseburger sub is a sandwich made of bread, ground beef, cheddar cheese, and a special sauce.
The sauce usually contains mayo, garlic powder, onion powder, and other spices. This sub often comes with sliced tomatoes and shredded lettuce to complete the cheeseburger look and taste.
Cheeseburger subs are extremely popular in the US and can be found in any restaurant that serves classic American cuisine. Favorite for lunch or dinner, cheeseburger subs are super delicious.
The first hamburger was invented way back in 1885. Even though the name may suggest it, this sandwich doesn’t originate from Hamburg, Germany. In fact, the only connection is the fact that Hamburg was known for its beef production back then.
The hamburger as we know it today is believed to have originated in Texas. There were other, similar versions in the past, but none resemble the modern version too closely.
The cheeseburger, however, is a whole different story. It’s really not exactly known who first thought to slap a piece of American cheese on a ground beef patty. Some believe it was 16-year-old Lionel Sternberger. Others favor Kaelin’s Restaurant in Louisville, Kentucky.
Lionel made his invention back in 1924, but called it a cheese hamburger instead of cheeseburger. Kaelin’s Restaurant got the name right, but ten years later, in 1934. Because of this little detail, many people believe it is them who should be considered the inventors.
The classic ingredients of a cheeseburger sub recipe include bread, ground beef, cheddar cheese on top, lettuce, and tomatoes. These are the standard, favorite toppings, however, as with any other recipe, you can find a wide range of variations.
The process of making this tasty dish starts with cooking the meat on medium high heat. When it’s almost done, it gets topped with juicy cheese. In the meantime, the delicious mayo-based sauce is prepared and spread on the bread.
Once the cheese is melted, the meat goes on the bread too. This is also when any toppings come along. Once everything is where it should be, the sub is closed and cut in half.
One 8-inch cheeseburger sub contains around 950 calories. Of course, this number can go up or down depending on what you decide to include. However, these are the stats for a classic version:
80g of carbs, 62g of protein, 40g of fat.
If you’d like to make your cheeseburger sub a bit healthier, you can go for a cheese-less option. If you don’t want to skip the cheese, you can try one that’s less calorie-high than cheddar. A smaller overall portion would also work.
Either way, we’d like to emphasize that a cheeseburger sub is an excellent meal to have! If you’re on a normal, 2000-calorie diet, one of these subs is a great option for lunch or dinner!
